EAST: Guides you to your greatest spiritual challenges and guards your path to illumination.

Skunk medicine operating through the contrary or reversed position indicates that your self-esteem may seem to others as if you are putting on airs. Observe whether or not you are repelling others in your vicinity because of envy, jealousy or a projection of their low self-esteem. Examine your feelings. Be truthful with yourself.  Right the situation by assuming the attitude of Skunk nonchalance. In assuming  nonchalance, you are neutralizing the effect of leaking energy.

In leaking vital energy, you may be stinking up your environment. This is similar to dumping all of your woes on anyone who will listen. If you are doing this, it may be time to shut your mouth and go within. You may also be leaking sexual energy and repulsing the object of your interest. That person may be too shy to tell you to lay off. Look deeply at your self-image and how others are reacting to it.

To balance the causes and effects of your actions and energy flows, you must decide whether or not you need to spray in the direction of others to repel their envy, greed, jealousy or overamorous tendencies. On the other hand, you need to always maintain your “right to be.” Self-respect ist he key to all of these situations, whereas ego is merely what you believe about yourself to be.

12 ARROW (TRUTH AS PROTECTION): You are being asked to find the truth of your present situation. You can protect yourself from uncomfortable situations by using the truth as a protection. It does not matter what others thing of you. You know the truth. When you honor that truth, you cannot be hurt by the lies of others.

Arrow also speaks of the ideas of Brotherhood. This is to say that you must armor yourself with the good intent and truthfulness of those you wish to associate with. Drop those who would no longer honor your path or truth. Remember: Arrow is straight and always says, “Stay on The Sacred Path.”

SOUTH: Protects the child within and reminds you when to be humble and when to trust, so that innocence will be balanced in your personality.  I have found this to be your most primal gifts.

Ant can carry a leaf over hundreds of miles just to get it back to the anthill. Ants in Africa wll strip a forest bare when food is scarce, if it takes them a year. Ant’s medicine is the strategy of patience. Ant is a builder like Beaver, is aggressive like badger, has stamina like Elk, scrutiny like Mouse, and give-away like Turkey.

Every Ant in an anthill is part of the Ant “group mind,” as all the Ants work for the Queen Ant and the hive. Self-sacrifice is a part of Ant medicine. Greater than ant’s other medicines, however is patience.

Ant people are active, community-minded folks who see the greater future needs of their town. Ant people are planners, like squirrel, and a are content to see their dreams being built a little at a time. In today’s society that is a rare quality.

In the desert, one type of Ant will burrow a conical hole with its apex at the bottom. The Ant will cover itself and patiently wait for some unsuspecting insect to fall in. As the sand crumbles, the prey eventually falls to the bottom. The Ant will cover itself and patiently wait for some unsuspecting insect to fall in. As the sand crumbles, the prey eventually falls to the bottom, only to find Ant’s open jaws.

Patience does have its rewards!

Ant people have a knowing about the sweet victory at the end of the line. There is never a concern about “going without” if they are late for the opening of a sale. If what they want is sold out, they are sure that something equal or better is available.

If you have Ant medicine, you eat slowly and deliberately and are content in knowing that “what is yours will come to you.” This knowing is good medicine. It shows a trust in the Universe to provide.

If Ant meandered into your spread today, it is time to show a little trust and patience in some life situation. You may have forgotten that you will always receive that which you need, at the time you need it most. If it is not on the horizon or just around the next anthill, you may need to use some strategy. How can you put to use your power of creation until “it” arrives — whatever “it” means to you at this time?

Ant is working for the good of the whole. Are you? If you are, be assured that the whole wants the same goodness for you, and that it will be provided.

21 RITES OF PASSAGE [CHANGE]: A Rite of Passage marks a time of some momentous change in life. If you have drawn this card, you are being asked to make note of the growth and change that is occurring because it will shape your future. The changes may be drastic and earth shaking, leaving a sense of confusion, but each one is benefiting your growth in some manner.

The Rite of Passage card can also speak of need for a change if you have lost the magick and spontaneity of life. Only you can make the decision to change the doldrums in excitement. If this decision is made, be ready to fly with Eagle and experience the new freedoms those changes can bring. In all cases, change is the key. Remember, if the moment you are experiencing is not beautiful, recreate it and you will have initiated your own Rite of Passage.

WEST: The animal in the West leads you to your personal truth and inner answers.  It also shows you the path in your goals.

50 ALLIGATOR [INTEGRATION]: The powerful gift of Alligator medicine is to fully appreciate and integrate all that life offers. Gator shows us the value of thoroughly digesting both the pleasures and pains of life. In many ways, Alligator’s medicine is reflected in its behavior. When Gator rolls under the water with its prey, its message is to roll with the punches when being attacked by life’s circumstances. Carefully storing its prey under a log until the meat is tender teaches us about patience and proper timing.

Choosing to laugh when tangled in your own seriousness can immediately diffuse the strangle hold of anger and judgments, self importance and inflexibility. Once your rigidity is removed, you are free to again integrate the present set of circumstances, finding what you may have formerly overlooked. Then you can learn Gator’s lessons on how to digest the value of any life lesson.

Gator medicine people refrain from passing judgment until they have examined all the facts and seen all sides of any situation. It may be time to drop opinions and judgments so that the present situation can be fully understood. Gator might have surfaced in the river of your life to tell you to digest the situation at hand before making any rash moves. You could also be dealing with someone who is too serious or rigid. If this is the case, embrace your flexibility, knowing that you are expanding beyond your former limits, even if others are wallowing in their self-created quicksand.

Have you been rushing through life and not taking the time to count your victories or ot digest your Rites of Passage? If so, it could be time to honor your progress, mindful that quick-fix solutions do not support long-term goals. Avoid getting stuck in the duality and quagmire of the human judgment game. Use calm resolve, review your healing process and life lessons, integrating the growth you have attained.

In all cases, Gator is telling you that something may have escaped your perception. Ask yourself what viewpoint or possibility did not get factored into your assessment. Did that missing piece of the puzzle keep you from having an accurate overview of what is now occurring? If so, it is never to late to reevaluate the situation from a more integrated and flexible point of view. Remember, Gator’s eyes and nostrils are often the only parts of its body above water while it senses its surroundings. Gator integrates all probabilities before it makes its move.

43 GIVE AWAY [RELEASE]: The Give-Away card spells relief through release. Don’t get stuck holding on to anything that no longer serves you. Associates, ideas, habits, and belongings may need to go at this time. Attachment to attitudes like needing to be needed or liked may no longer serve either. You are being asked to share what you can, give away something that can  help someone else, or just let go. Don’t hold on so tight. The natural flow of life is squelched when you insist on total control. In all cases, the Give-Away card tells us to release any bond that makes us captives of our own creation. In so doing, we can spread our wings and fly. Remember that generosity is a talent and a virtue that comes from dropping the fear of scarcity and from trusting Great Mystery.

NORTH: Gives wise counsel and reminds you when to speak and when to listen.  It also reminds you to be grateful for every blessing every day.  I  believe this represents your relationship to personal authority.

30 RABBIT [FEAR]: Rabbit is the Fear Caller. He goes out and shouts, “Eagle, I am so afraid of you.” If Eagle doesn’t hear him, Rabbit calls louder, “Eagle, stay away from me!” Eagle, now hearing Rabbit, comes and eats him. Rabbit calls bobcats, wolves, coyotes, and even snakes until they come.

As the story shows, Rabbit medicine people are so afraid of tragedy, illness, disaster, and “being taken,” that they call those very fears to them to teach them lessons. The keynote here is what you resist will persist! What you fear most is what you will become.

Here is the lesson. If you pulled Rabbit, stop talking about horrible things happening and get rid of “what if” in your vocabulary. This card may signal a time of worry about the future or of trying to exercise your control over that which is not yet in form — the future. Stop now! Write your fears down and be willing to feel them. Breathe into them, and feel them running through your body into Mother Earth as a give-away.

8 EAST SHIELD [ILLUMINATION/CLARITY] The East Shield represents a need for clarity independence in some part of your lie. It may also mark a time of illumination when suddenly things begin to fit together and make sense to you. If you have been confused, now is the time to ask for order in your life. Order can be restored through making lists of things ot do, clearing up your living space, or finishing old projects. When order is restored, you are then more receptive and can find the clarity you need.

The illumination of the East can also be asking you to assist another in finding clarity. Sharing your ideas may bring illumination as others give you feedback. It may also be a time to heal old wounds or negative thoughts so that there is room for clarity to enter your life. Be creative and daring in order to stretch your concept of who you really are and venture into new realms of understanding.

In all cases, the east Shield marks a time of new freedoms that come from wiping the mud from your eyes and seeing with the eye of Eagle. Observe which thoughts keep you in blidners and clear that Mindness through summoning your courage and taking flight

ABOVE: Teaches you how to honor the Great Star Nation; and reminds you that you came from thE stars and to the stars you will return.  It is the guardian of the Dream-time for your personal access to the other dimensions.

11 MOOSE [SELF-ESTEEM]: Moose medicine is often found in elders who have walked the Good Red Road and have seen many things in their Earth Walk. Their joy lies in being the teachers of the children, and in being the first ones to give encouragement. This is not to say that Moose medicine people do not sue their wisdom to warn as well as to give praise, because they do. Moose medicine people know what to say, when to say it, and to whom.

The elders are honored in tribal law for their gifts of wisdom, for their teaching abilities, and for the calmness they impart in Council. If you are wise beyond your years and have the gift of Moose medicine, use this gift to encourage others to learn and grow. There are many facets to the wisdom of Moose medicine.

If you have chosen the Moose card, you have reason to feel good about something you have accomplished on your journey. This may be a habit you have broken, a completion of some sort, and insight on a goal, or a new sense of self that you have fought hard to earn. It is a time of feeling harmonious pride, and of recognizing those who aided you in the process.

One good exercise in Moose medicine is to write down things that you can love about yourself and your progress in life. The apply these same things to friends, family, coworkers and life. Don’t forget to share the findings with others. They need the encouragement as much as you do.

38 FIELD OF PLENTY (IDEAS/NEEDS MANIFESTED):  The cornucopia is full of an abundance of ideas, talents, clothing, experiences, food, companions, and feelings that will serve the needs of the Children of Earth. If the Field of Plenty card has appeared, you are being assured that what you need at this time is manifesting Your needs will be met. Give thanks now, before your needs are met. Show Great Mystery the trust you have in your process, dropping any doubt, becoming childlike again.

Do not limit the manner in which the physical manifestation occurs. Original Source operates in mysterious ways, placing hte perfect people, places, and things on our paths to be answers to our true needs. We are asked to recall the differences between true needs and material crutches, which are mere illusions of happiness. In all instances, the Field of Plenty reminds us of our Divine right to have our prayers answered and our needs met.

BELOW: Teaches you about the inner Earth, and how to stay grounded and on the path.

“Stealing horse is stealing power” was a statement made frequently in historical Native america and a reference to the esteemed role which Horse played in the native cultures.

Horse is a physical power and unearthly power. In shamanic practices throughout the world, Horse enables shamans to fly through the air and reach heaven.

Humanity made a great leap forward when Horse was domesticated, a discovery akin to that of fire. Before Horse, humans were earthbound, heavy-laden, and slow creatures indeed. Once humans climbed on Horse’s back, they were as free and fleet as the wind. They could carry burdens for great distances with ease. Through their special relationship with Horse, humans altered their self concept beyond measure. Horse was the first animal medicine of civilization. Humanity owes an incalculable debt to Horse and to the new medicine it brought. It would be a long walk to see one’s brother or sister if Horse had not welcomed the two-legged rider upon its back. Today we measure the capacity of engines with the term “horsepower,” a reminder of the days when Horse was an honored and highly-prized partner with humanity.

In understanding the power of Horse, you may see how to strive for a balanced medicine shield. True power is wisdom in remembering your total journey.  Wisdom comes from remembering pathways you have walked in another person’s moccasins. Compassion, caring, teaching, loving, and sharing your gifts, talents and abilities are the gateways to power.

3 VISION QUEST (SEEKING/FINDING) : The Vision Quest card speaks of a time of new directions  or strengthening of the present path based on personal truth. Sometimes to find this truth it is necessary to Enter the Silence and remove personal confusion. In other instances it is actually necessary to go on a Vision Quest.

This card tells you that the course of your life needs to be clarified through vision. It is now time to ask for assistance from the Allies and/or Ancestors so that your choices will be reinforced with their wisdom and assistance. Seeking your potential answers is the keynote. Trusting those feelings and following them with action is the way to find truth. To accomplish this you must release confusion and doubt, then proceed by allowing your truth to emerge. Remember: in seeking you are asking for answers; be willing to accept and recognie the truth when it comes to you. Recognition and acceptance always precede inner knowing.

WITHIN: Teaches you  how to find your heart’s joy and how to be faithful to your personal truths.  It is also the protector of your sacred space, the place that is yours alone and is never shared except by invitation.

3 ELK [STAMINA]: Elk medicine teaches that pacing yourself will increase your stamina.  Elk medicine people may not be the first ones to arrive at a goal, but they always arrive without getting burned out. If you have taken on too much recently, it might be a good idea to look at how you plan to finish what you have started without ending up in the hospital.

Elk have a curious kind of warrior energy because, except at mating time, they honor the company of their own gender.  They can call on the medicine of brotherhood or sisterhood. In discovering the strength which is gained from loving the gender that is your own, you will feel the comradship that arises from similarity of experience.  This is a special medicine that allows the friendship of others of your same sex to overcome potential competition or jealousy.

If you have picked Elk medicine, you may be telling yourself to seek the company of your own gender for awhile.  You may need a support group to realign yourself with the stamina of the warrior/warrioress energy that you are a part of.  This communication with others of your own sex allows you to air your feelings in safety and to get feedback from others who have had the same experiences. You may need a new sense of community–communication in unity.

Elk could also be telling you to look at how you are holding up physically to the stresses in your life, and to pace yourself so that you maintain an equilibrium of energy over the distance you plan to cover.  Vitamins or high-energy foods may be one solution, along with some personal quiet time for replenishment.

15 TALKING STICK [VIEWPOINTS/OPTIONS]: The Talking Stick reminds us of the validity of other viewpoints and teaches us how to listen and apply what we hear. We are being reminded not to interrupt others who are imparting wisdom. We are taught through listening that life has millions of options and answers to any dilemma.

If the Talking Stick has appeared in your spread, you are probably not allowing yourself any options in your present situation or have become too stuck on one idea to see any further than your self. Open up and listen to the opportunities that the Talking Stick says are coming your way. Remember all life signals and/or options are available to those who will hear. You are being given an opportunity to grow through an alternative route. Use this gift now.

RIGHT: Guards your male side and teaches you that, no mater where you turn, it will be your father-protector (spirit guide) within.  This animal also carries your courage and warrior spirit.

18 REVERSED LYNX [SECRETS]: If Lynx has appeared in the reversed position, it is time to shut your big mouth. Something you are jabbering about has let the “cat” out of the bag. Are you defiling a sacred trust, or have you broken a promise to a friend? If not, you may have pulled a good boner on yourself by blabbing your latest idea to the friend of a competitor. Watch your tongue and see if you are able to refrain from gossiping, or talking about your latest romantic conquest. Look and see if, in your present state, you are able to listen and truly be interested in someone else’s stories or ideas. On this level, Lynx is telling you to become worthy of trust. Then the secrets will be available to you.

You might look at choosing to have your brain in gear before your babble starts, or your foot may have to replace your tongue. This is the “know it all” syndrome. Fine — if you want to talk, just sew up your ears. After all, talking leaves no room for hearing or learning. Lynx is a tough teacher, and if you have let the cat out of the bag, be ready for the consequences.

Become Lynx and wear the Mona Lisa smile. Only  you will know what you are smiling about. The cat will not have your tongue–you will– as well as the power over it.

22 HEYOKAH [TRICKSTER]: If the Trickster has appeared on your horizon, you are in for a barrel of laughs. You may be doing exactly the opposite of what you need to be doing and are about to get busted for it.  Stop leaking your creative energy on other people’s problems or high drama. Stop being so serious and crack a smile, or Coyote will dog your dreams. Remember that some days you are the fireplug and some days you are the Dog. That goes for everyone, so don’t let getting pooped on get you down. Learning through laughter  or opposites can be fun. The keynote to the Heyokah card is to lighten up and start balancing the sacredness with irreverence. If you are just being stubborn, it may be time to create a contrary lesson that will force you to crack up, crack a smile, or trick you into going into the crack in the universe to find out what’s really important.

LEFT: Protector of the Female side and teaches you that you must learn to receive abundance as well as to nurture yourself and others.  The left-side animal is also your teacher about relationships and mothering.

9 BUTTERFLY [TRANSFORMATION]: If you have drawn Butterfly reversed, your lesson is a simple one. There is a need for change in your life that you are not recognizing. This could be a possible need for freedom, for a vacation, or for a new job. You may believe that change is too difficult, and you may rule it out to preserve the comfort of old habits. But in ruling out any possibility of change, you are saying that the courage of Butterfly has been lost. Why does Butterfly represent courage? Because there is a totally different world outside the cocoon, where the known realities of the chrysalis are no longer applicable. This new world demands that you use your newfound wings and FLY!

36 THUNDER-BEINGS [USABLE ENERGY]: The Thunder-Beings card is telling you that you are a Catalyzer and may now command the usable energy at hand. You are being funded with the energy needed to complete any task you have in mind. If you have been trying without results or just couldn’t get enough steam going, this card signals relief.  You can drop the frustration and get on with it. The energy is now yours. Call it to you and use it. Usable energy comes in many forms. See which kind of energy applies to your present situation and then command it. Your body is the lightning rod and will conduct all the energy you need. Shout your intention to the Sky Nation. The Thunder-beings remind you to replenish yourself equally to the amount of energy you expend.

When an inquirer is found to be suitable for the Craft, but not yet ready for admission to a coven, a ceremony called “Dedication” may be performed. The purpose of this Rite is to call the attention of the Lady and the Horned God to the individual, and specifically to his/her desire to enter the Craft.

Dedication is not a formal or rigorous Rite. It may be performed at any time a Priestess or Priest desires, and when the candidate feels ready to receive it. Initially the occasion for the ceremony is solemn, as the candidate should feel that in being dedicated she/he is undertaking an obligation to do all that is in his/her way into the Craft and full participation in it. After the ritual ends the occasion is joyous, as the candidate has now started upon the road which will lead him/her to the Craft, and has acknowledged his/her beginning steps toward full participation.

All that is needed to perform the Dedication is a candle, although incense may also be used if desired. The symbolism of the light is in this instance rather obvious. Light, or knowledge, is at the end of the road on which the candidate is embarking. In being dedicated the candidate acknowledges that he/she is making a start on that road.

The candidate must either ask for dedication, or he/she may be told that he/she may be dedicated if he/she wishes. He/She must of course agree to the dedication for it to be effective, and the Rite must be done by a member of the priesthood of opposite sex to the candidate, although an intermediary can serve if necessary.

Once the candle is lit it must be left to burn out, symbolizing that once the candidate is dedicated she or he will live out this lifetime in the dedicated state.

The lunar phase is not important, but waxing is somewhat better than waning.

Dedication has the result of impressing on the newcomer the seriousness of his/her undertaking the study of the Craft. Dedication of a candidate on his/her first inquiry into the Craft is unusual and should not be undertaken foolishly. Usually it is better to see a candidate for a few times before the Rite of Dedication is performed. The conditions for Dedication are not restrictive.

The candidate should read through the Dedication completely before the ritual begins.

Candle and candle-holder are at hand. They are placed on a low table at which the candidate may kneel. Copies of the Rite are also placed on the table so that the candidate may read from them.

Do you wish to be dedicated
To the Gods and to the Craft,
That you may learn of them
And that you may join the Craft of the Wise
When you are ready?

I do.
Blessed be my eyes
That have seen this day.

Blessed bye thine eyes.

Blessed be my ears
That hear thy voice.

Blessed be thine ears.

Blessed be my mouth
That it may speak of thy blessings.

Blessed be thy mouth.

Blessed be my feet
That they have led me in these ways.

Blessed bey thy feet.

The candidate kneels in front of the table, and lights the candle.

O Mother of All,
Creatress of all living,
O Father of the woodlands,
Master of Death,
Will you teach (Name)
That I may learn of thee
And become wise in the love of the Gods,
Strong in the aid of man,
Learned in thy arts,
And skillful in thy ways.

Do you pledge yourself to the Goddess
To love her
And to the Horned God
To honor him?

Gladly do I pledge myself
To the Goddess, to love her
And to the Horned God, to Honor him.

Do you pledge yourself to keep silent
Of what you shall learn
And to respect that which is taught you?

Gladly do I so pledge myself
To the Goddess, to love her
And to the Horned God, to honor him,
To keep silent of what I shall learn
And to respect that which is taught me.

Then hear the charge of the Great Mother,
Called by all names of power among men,
Before whose altars all the world
Has approached in reverence:

I am the Eternal Goddess
Yet I demand no sacrifice…

Rather I give to those who honor me.
Yet I charge you, that if you would be mine
And follow in my ways,
You shall gather yourselves
Once at each full moon
And give worship to me… to your Queen.
Each of you must recognize me
And look at me,
Lest you forget from whom you come
And to whom you are called.
If you would be mine you must honor my charge,
For those things which I have made law
May be dissolved by no man.

Shall you obey this charge?

Gladly shall I obey
The charge of the Goddess.
I pledge myself to the Goddess, to love her
And to the Horned God, to honor him,
To keep silent of what I shall learn
And to respect that which is taught me.

Then you shall be taught to be wise,
That in the fullness of time
You shall count yourself
Among those who serve the Gods,
Among those who belong to the Craft,
Among those who are called The Mighty Dead.

Let thy life, and the life to come
Be in the service
Of our Noble Lady.

Blessed be this time that marks my life,
That I shall ever after be a child of the Gods,
That I shall learn of them
And embrace them as my own.

Priestess/Priest: (making the Sign of the Pentacle in blessing the candidate)

May the blessings of our Gracious Lady
And of Her hearty Consort
Go ever with thee.

The candidate arises and is usually kissed and congratulated by the priest and then by the other initiates in attendance.

Solitary Ritual For The Full Moon

If no other of like interest are available at the time of the full moon the following rite may be accomplished by the solitary individual.

The ritual should be performed at the time of the full moon, and preferably near midnight. It should be accomplished out-of-doors or, failing that, at a window through which the moonlight may shine upon the worshipper.

The robe or gown or other apparel worn for this ceremony should be unique and “magical” or “witchy” in its cut and feel. It should if possible be worn only for ritual and magical purposes. (Essentially, however, any garb… or none at all,,, may be worn.) Before dressing for the ceremony one should bathe, bearing strongly in the mind that the water is “cleansing the soul and spirit”, as well as the body.

Go alone to a place of solitude which you have selected previously, or to the room which you have prepared, carrying with you the implements needed for the rite.

Build at the spot a circle of 13 stones, each being about the size of a man’s head, for the outdoor rite. If the ritual is to be held indoors smaller stones may be used. Lay the stones down starting from the north and working clockwise about eight-foot circle. Two additional stones should be placed at the center to support a small, simple alter… or to serve in themselves. One alter-stone should be to the east of the circles center-point and other placed next to it at the west of the center-point.

Place an image of the Goddess on the alter, and light incense before it. A cup or goblet of wine about half full should be placed before the image of the Lady. A copy of this ritual may also be placed where it can be easily seen.

If the ritual is held out-doors, torches should be used if no other persons are about. Indoors, white or blue candles may be used. A candle or torch should be placed at each side of the alter, as you say:

My Lady of Silver magic,
I do build this circle…
A place sacred and apart…
In your honor.

Place a light at the North point of the circle, saying:

Blessed One, the earth is yours.
May it become fertile and rich
And free from spoil.

Place a light at the East point of the circle, saying:

O Lady of laughter and cheer,
The skies are yours.
May the air be clear and sweet
And the clouds giving of soft rains.

Place a light at the south point of the circle, saying:

O Goddess of warmth,
The seasons are yours.
May each spring bring forth
More richness of the natural world.

Place a light at the west point of the circle, saying:

Lovely One, the sparkling waters are yours.
May the stream and rivers
Flow pure and clear
Once more.

Stand before the alter and the image of the Lady… in view of the moon, if possible… and raise your arms out toward the moon in salute, invoking in these or similar words:

My Lady of silver magic,
I have built this sacred place
For you, and in your honor.
I do ask that your gracious presence
Be with me here.

Stand silently for a while, with arms out and eyes closed, meditating on the presence of a mysterious and magical Goddess… She who was greeted and know by your own distant ancestors, in rites much like this, in times long past. Meditate on Her being present once again. And close at hand.

Kneel before the alter, facing the image of the Lady, and take up the goblet of wine, saying:

In honor of you, my Lady,
Do I pour this libation

Pour a few drops before the alter, stand and drink. Now is the time to sit and relax. Meditation on the Goddess in Her many aspects is in order, as are various types of divination. Folk songs of lave and magic may be sung, if this is your inclination, or poetry read.

When you feel that the rite should end, put out the torches or candles at the north, east, south, and west in that order. Kneel at the alter, saying:

O gracious and lovely one,
I thank you for strengthening me
With you presence.
May all magic and power be yours!
Blessed Be!

Put out the torches or candles by the alter. Then state:

The rite is ended.

Ritual of the Full Moon

This work is to be performed on the day or night of the full moon. It is best out of doors, when one has not looked upon the face of the goddess until the time of the ceremony.

It is a purification of the self at a time when the light of the reflected sun is in full balance, neither waxing or waining. In ancient times the moon was both a god and a goddess, and we awaken these images within ourselves during the working. As they surface a true balance of the selves will result, for we are both the sun and the moon.

Robes are recommended, with sandals if the weather permits, but anything is acceptable as long as the colors are somber. Emerald, indigo, violet and very dark purple are also associated with the moon.

It can be said that Pan and Isis are the best aspects of the moon: Pan gives the idea of the archetypal strength which is characteristic of the etheric and of the action of the Moon on Earth; and Isis gives the idea of archetypical virginity of the Feminine side of God, the whole receptive side of things which is shown forth by the reflection of the Sun’s light on the Moon. Therefore the visualizations of Gabriel are Pan-like, and invocations are used for both Pan and Isis.

Preparation is the art of successful ritual, and I do not merely mean setting the scene, but the mental expedience of knowing that a full moon is approaching, and watching the growth toward fullness.

The Ritual

Sit for a moment in meditation before beginning the work. If outdoors, feel the light of the moon upon you; if in your temple, then feel the power of the force of light. It is at this point that breathing and relaxation exercises are used.

Stand and cast the great circle, using the solar cross as the purification symbol. This is to remind us that we are both male and female.

Invoke the greater powers of the Universe.

Visualization of Gabriel

Walk or turn to the quarter of the west (elements of the winds) and visualize Gabriel, who gives the powers of visions. He can be imagined as a beautiful blue-green figure with silver flashes of light and a tremendous swirl of color of various shades of peacock tints shot with silver which are his wings, or a part of his extensive aura, and about his head and beneath his feet, streams liquid silver.

This form then changes to a tremendous pillar of silver light, reaching far as the sky and standing upon the earth. This is like a battery of the Universe through which you receive the basis of
vision-clairvoyance or clairaudience.

The pillar is then changed into a nine-sided solid crystal, reflecting silver and blue-green light. Watch this solid figure and see what appears.
As a conclusion, change the form back into the angelic form.

Progress then to the north, east, and south, invoking the powers of those quarter. All this time you have not looked at the moon, if outdoors. Feel the balance the great powers produce within you.

Invocation of the God and Goddess

Face East, look at the moon and say:
Great Mother,
Giver of all life,
I invoke you into this blessed circle,
That your presence here
Fills me with joy and understanding.

Triple moon,
Ever changing one
We invoke and call upon ye.

Assume God position and say:

Great God above all Gods,
Descend and protect this circle.
Most Hold One,
Grant that I may reflect thy light,
And be worthy thee.

Light incense and bless the four quarters. This completes the casting of the circle. If this is performed near water, some of that boy should be blessed an cast around the smaller world.

The Kerubim

The great powers in the etheric sphere are the Angels, or Kerubim. We invoke their powers and presences here to heal our spiritual and physical bodies. We invoke these Beings in the natural position of the Zodiac: East-Fire; South-Earth; West-Air; North-Water. The four elements of Earth, Fire, Water, and Air correspond with the Zodiacal signs of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarious.

Turn each to the element and imagine the feeling of each direction.

Then visualize a Swastika of pure white brilliance, with one of the elementals on each arm. You stand in the center. The cross begins to move slowly, and then more rapidly pouring the strength of the elements into you, creating a completed, balanced man. Contemplate the action performed.

The full moon is the time of the Eucharist – – the time of balanced action. A small cake and wine for each participant is needed. The woman holds the cakes while the man offers and blesses them, then the man holds the wine while the woman in turn blesses them.

First the man dedicates the cakes to Pan, the woman dedicates the wine to Isis. If the sexes are not equally represented, then one or the other assumes the aspect of the other. If only one celebrates, then they assume both identifications.

Dedication of The Cakes

Walk the great circle once and return to the East, holding up the element saying:

Lo Pan! Lo Pan!
Horned head and cloven hoof;
These our offerings, Pan, to thee,
Goad-foot God of Arcady.

Half a man and half a beast,
Pan is the greatest, Pan is least.

Human heart and human brain,
Pan the goad-god comes again.

Accept these cakes I offer thee,
God of all Fertility.

He turns and offers the cakes to the woman who says:

Lo, I receive the gifts thou bringest me –
Life, and more life, in fullest ecstasy.
I am the moon, the moon that draweth thee.
I am the waiting earth that needeth thee.
Come unto me, Great Pan, come unto me.

Holding up the wine she says:

Isis! Isis!
Holiest of the Holy,
Perpetual comfort of mankind.
Natural mother of all things,
Mistress of all the elements;
Isis-Athene; Isis-Hathor; Isis-Net;
Isis-Sati; Isis-Sothis;
Great Lady, God Mother
Fill this wine with your manifested alone,
Accept this self I offer thee.

She turns and offers the wine to the man who says:

O first-begotten Love, come unto me,
And let the worlds be formed of me and thee.
I receive the gifts though bringest me –
Life, and more lie, in fullest ecstasy.

Both assume the kneeling position of Maat (kneeling on heels) keeping the stilless of mind intimate with the occasion.

Thanks are given to the Great father, Great mother, and the eight beings attending the circle. Close circle. Thus ends the ritual of the full moon.

Though you may not think of yourself as a hero, you do play the starring role in the story of your life journey. It’s a story you’ve been composing since you took your first breath–maybe even before. Many people have acted as guides, teachers, and mentors to help and inspire you along the way. Some may also have suggested how you should live your life and the path you should follow. But ultimately, it’s your story, your life, your journey that required you to make difficult choices and carry out heroic actions to bring you to the chapter you’re in presently.

The word hero literally means “protector” or “defender.” You have played the role of protecting and defending who you are, what you believe in, and whom and what you care about. Yet, along your life path, your core values probably were challenged periodically. If you have ever asked yourself, “What am I supposed to be doing in this situation?” or “What do I really believe to be true?” you can identify with the hero’s journey.

“Hero’s journey” is a term coined by mythologist Joseph Campbell. He referred to it as a monomyth, basically the same story told over and over again through the ages. The plot line of the tale is about something of incalculable value that has been lost and must be found. The principal character, or the self, must do the finding. The essential, underlying theme of this story is searching for meaning in our lives and finding our calling. The hero’s journey is the theme of countless stories in literature and popular culture–”Casablanca,” “The Wizard of Oz,” and “Star Wars,” to name a few.

Awaken to the call

The hero’s journey usually begins when you feel something is amiss, something has been taken from you or is lacking in your life. You feel called to make something right, recover what has been lost, or discover or give birth to something new. Campbell taught that most heroes feel unprepared for, ill-equipped for, and uncertain of the journey. This uncertainty forces you to uncover a deep inner strength and awareness to help you meet the obstacles encountered and accept whatever help or guidance is offered.

It’s often said that people don’t change until they hurt bad enough. The call to change or let go of someone or something–that relationship or unfulfilling job–may linger for years. A part of you wants something better, but there is the fear of how you’ll be able to manage, how you’ll live without that person.

Early in my working life I returned from vacation to a job I’d been at for 15 years to what was essentially a demotion. I called a friend, who said to me, “You don’t have to stay there.” What a revelation! Before I gave fear a chance to hold me back, I spontaneously answered the call and walked out on the spot. Subsequently, all the emotions poured out as I began to find my way. Friends helped me overcome my fears and feelings of inadequacy, guiding me down an entirely new and fulfilling path filled with growth, new skills, and many more adventures.

Journey into the unknown

Many life circumstances may require you to take this journey into places you have never been before. A journey may be short, or it may last many years. Moving from childhood through puberty and teenage years to adulthood is a massively transformative experience we all share, being tested and challenged along the way. The hero’s journey can be experienced in career transitions, relationships, serious illnesses, and major losses of all kinds. Before you embark, you may think you know who you are and what you believe in and care about. But this may change while you’re on the journey.  At times you may feel like you are fighting dragons and demons, like you’re being rocked to your spiritual core; you may even question your faith.

“Superman” movie hero Christopher Reeve, who later became a quadriplegic, defined a hero as “an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.”  We’ve all had to overcome what may have seemed like overwhelming obstacles. Becoming a hero may be stimulated by a passion for helping others or a desire to support a cause or right an injustice.

Parents, teachers, clergy, activists, firefighters, rescue teams, and military forces do these things every day as part of their defined roles. True heroes do not think of themselves as heroes at all. They just do what feels like the right thing to do. Even if none of these roles have been yours, you have been called to put your best self forward in your work, for your family, or in other aspects of your life.

Giving birth is one form of a heroic journey. No matter how much you may have learned ahead of time, you are unprepared for the actual physical changes and challenges you encounter. This heroism is immediately followed by a brand new journey and responsibility of caring for an infant.  Having just returned home with her firstborn, an overwhelmed friend found herself asking, “… they trusted me to take this child home?” Another mother shared, “I don’t know how I ever had the courage to have another child!”

Your calling

Campbell believed that heroes give their lives to something bigger than themselves. Have you found that “something bigger” to give yourself to? If not, perhaps you are now ready to do so. It’s a journey worth taking and may be the very reason for your being here.

This journey may begin by opening your awareness to messages from people or situations that may be asking you to consider something more for your life. The journey may be one of inner spiritual exploration, some form of study or training, or connecting your heart to a cause or mission. Your calling may have nothing to do with “doing” something, but rather with “being” more fully in the life you are living.

The journey of uncovering your calling may be fraught with fears and obstacles, trial and error. However, your greatest courage is often revealed when you allow yourself to follow your heart, to listen to your inner voice.

Oprah Winfrey said, “The real work of our lives is to become aware. And awakened. To answer the call.” Each time you embark on the hero’s journey, it leads you closer to realizing your true self. Take the journey and allow yourself to answer your call.
