The Ritual

HPS and HP take their place by altar.

The HPS places her athame in the bowl of water, and the HP places his athame in the bowl of salt.

Both lift their bowl high and place back upon the altar. HP takes salt and places in the water, and both stir the salt into the water with their athame’s.

Both go to where they will be welcoming other members into the circle.

 

GOMORY: draws the circle clockwise while envisioning the power going into the Circle and

Rune invokes: “I conjure thee, O Circle of Power, that thou be a meeting place of love, joy and truth; a shield against all wickedness and evil; a boundary between men and the realms of the Mighty Ones; a rampart and protection that shall preserve and contain the power that we shall raise within this circle. Wherefore do I bless and consecrate you, in the names of Inanna and Dimuzi.” Gomory replaces sword in front of altar.

Samahain:

The timing of contemporary Samhain (pronounced “sow-en”) celebrations varies according to spiritual tradition and geography.

Many celebrate Samhain over the course of several days and nights, and these extended observances usually include a series of solo rites as well as ceremonies, feasts, and gatherings with family, friends, and spiritual community. In the northern hemisphere, many Pagans celebrate Samhain from sundown on October 31 through November 1. Others hold Samhain celebrations on the nearest weekend or on the Full or New Moon closest to this time. Some Pagans observe Samhain a bit later, or near November 6, to coincide more closely with the astronomical midpoint between Fall Equinox and Winter Solstice.”

Religious scholars agree that the word Samhain comes from the Gaelic “Samhuin,” but they’re divided on whether it means the end or beginning of summer. After all, when summer is ending here on earth, it’s just beginning in the Underworld. Samhain actually refers to the daylight portion of the holiday, on November 1st.

The Witches’ New Year

Sunset on Samhain is the beginning of the Celtic New Year. The old year has passed, the harvest has been gathered, cattle and sheep have been brought in from the fields, and the leaves have fallen from the trees. The earth slowly begins to die around us.

This is a good time for us to look at wrapping up the old and preparing for the new in our lives. Think about the things you did in the last twelve months. Have you left anything unresolved? If so, now is the time to wrap things up. Once you’ve gotten all that unfinished stuff cleared away, and out of your life, then you can begin looking towards the next year.

All Hallow Mass

Around the eighth century or so, the Catholic Church decided to use November 1st as All Saints Day. This was actually a pretty smart move on their part – the local pagans were already celebrating that day anyway, so it made sense to use it as a church holiday.

All Saints’ became the festival to honor any saint who didn’t already have a day of his or her own. The mass which was said on All Saints’ was called Allhallowmas – the mass of all those who are hallowed. The night before naturally became known as All Hallows Eve, and eventually morphed into what we call Halloween.

 

Honoring the Ancestors

Samhain is known by most folks as Halloween, but for Pagans it’s considered a Sabbat to honor the ancestors who came before us, marking the dark time of the year. It’s a good time to contact the spirit world, because it’s the time when the veil between this world and the next is at its thinnest. If you’ve ever done genealogy research, or if you’ve had a loved one die in the past year, this is the perfect night to celebrate their memory. If we’re fortunate, they will return to communicate with us from beyond the veil, and offer advice, protection and guidance for the upcoming year.

In antiquity, it was felt that since the veil between the realms of the living and the dead was at its thinnest, the dead walked among us. Our ancestral dead were welcomed into our homes and posed no threat to our home. Very often the spirits of ancestors sought warmth around the fireside on this night. Fires were left lighting in the grate to warm the spirits and food was left out for them. Even though the ancestral ghosts were benign, it was still a good idea to avoid them by going to bed early.

However, the ghosts may not have been entirely benign. They needed some sort of appeasement in the form of ritual offerings on this night. So long as the offering was forthcoming the ghosts were happy and benevolent, but if the offering was withheld another side of the ghost’s features were presented. Bad luck would descend on the household and all would not be well the coming year.

The idea of this tradition may have survived in the custom of “trick or treat”. Children, dressed as ghosts and witches, invite the household to make a donation or face the consequences. The ‘treat’ may represent the ritual offering while the ‘trick’, nowadays a harmless prank, may represent the malevolent consequences of inadequately appeasing the ancestral ghost on this night.

This is the night when the gateway between
our world and the spirit world is thinnest.

Tonight we honor our ancestors.
Spirits of our fathers and mothers, I call to you,
and welcome you to join us for this night.

GOMORY hands MARA each element as MARA calls in the watchtowers while lighting each directional candle that burns throughout the service.

GOMORY hands MARA the water which MARA brings to each individual in the circle and spritzes the person with water. “Feel the water which refreshes and replenishes our souls as I call in the East. Welcome Water.” She lights the Fire in the East and returns to the Altar.

GOMORY then hands MARA the candle which MARA brings to each individual in the circle for them to run their hands through the flame.Feel the flame. She says, “The flame purifies and impassions as I call down the South. Welcome Fire.” She then lights the fire in the South and returns to the altar.

GOMORY then hands MARA the stick of incense. MARA goes to each person while saying: “Smell the incense. It aids in calling in air which  brings us the air which clears our minds of outside concerns so we can focus on our working. Welcome air.  She then lights the candle in the West and returns to the Altar.

GOMORY then hands MARA a bowl of soil“Now I’m calling down the North, feel the Earth that’s in this bowl. Earth manifests our intent”  and each person around  the circle will run their fingers through the earth in the bowl.  “Welcome Earth.” She then lights the directional candle.

MARA returns the bowl to the Altar and takes her place in the circle.

As MARA releases the elements while opening the circle she starts with Earth/North going counterclockwise and says, “Thank you for you joining us Earth” and blows out the candle. Goes to the western candle. “Thank you for joining us Air” blows out the candle and turns to the south. “Thank you for joining  us fire” blows out the candle. Then lastly goes to the east. “Thank you for joining us water” and blows out the candle and returns to the circle.

the sword, on the floor in front of the altar, or on the altar itself.

A supply of chosen incense, and matches or a cigarette-lighter, should be handy by the altar.

A candle is placed at each of the East, South and West points of the circumference of the Circle, completing the four elemental candles which must burn throughout the ritual. (The elemental placings are East, Air; South, Fire; West, water; and North, Earth.) 

Music.

The Ritual

The HPS places her athame in the bowl of water, and the HP places his athame in the bowl of salt.

Both lift their bowl high and place back upon the altar. The HP takes salt and places in the water, and both stir the salt into the water with their athame’s.

Both go to where they will be welcoming other members into the circle. HPS admits the first male with a kiss while spinning him clockwise (deosil).  The man then turns and admits the next woman the same way. Alternate male/female/male.

 HPS and HP then takes their place by altar. Crone draws the circle clockwise while envisioning the power going into the Circle while reciting the following invocation:

“I conjure thee, O Circle of Power, that thou best a meeting place of love and joy and truth; a shield against all wickedness and evil; a boundary between men and the realms of the Mighty Ones; a rampart and protection that shall preserve and contain the power that we shall raise within thee. Wherefore do I bless thee and consecrate thee, in the names of Inanna and Dimuzi.”

The Crone replaces sword in front of altar and HPS names three witches and hands each one their element while saying aloud what the element is for.  The witch then takes the element around once to strengthen the Circle.

Four members will call in the watchtowers while pointing with their athame accordingly.  Words are spoken by each individual as inspired.

 

The HP speaks the following:

Mabon is a time when the earth is dying a little each day, and we welcome the harvest. We honor the darker aspects of the goddess/mother earth.

With food on the altar, we celebrate the second harvest, and the autumn equinox. We show gratitude and are thankful for the things we have, both material and spiritual.

 

The equinox is a time to meditate on harmony and Balance.

Also, we call upon the gods to help protect our Hearth and Home.

Finally, this Mabon we will celebrate the Full Moon.

 

(HP Picks up the chalice of wine and holds it upward toward the sky and says) –

“Blessed be this season of Mabon,

 Time of the Second Harvest –

 The harvest of fruit and wine,

 Blessed be the Lady!”

 

(Place the chalice back on the altar and now pick up your athame and say) –

“Today all things are in balance,

 Both night and day and Goddess and God are equal

 as are life and death –

Blessed be the Lord!”

 

(Place athame back on the altar and say)-

“But tonight darkness conquers the light,

 taking us into the dark of the year,

 It is a time to reflect upon those who have passed

 and those who are yet to come.”

 

In honor of those we wish to remember, I will recite the following poem

 

Mabon Lament

 

Do not stand at my grave and weep,

I am not there, I do not sleep

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond’s glint on snow

 

I am the sunlight on ripened grain,

I am the gentle autumn’s rain

When you wake up in the morning’s hush,

I am the swift, uplifting rush

 

Of quiet birds in circled flight,

I am the soft star that shines at night

*I am the ocean’s calming waters,

Which carries Earth Mother’s sons and daughters

 

Do not stand at my grave and cry,

I am not there, I did not die

(Pick up an apple, symbol of the Goddess, from the basket and hold it close to your heart, reflecting on the events passed and people whom you wish to remember at this time. When you are ready, say) –

“Tonight I mourn the loss of life and light,

 But just as the apple which I hold in my hand gives both life and death,

 So do our beloved deities –

 Those who have passed shall return as surely as shall the light.”

 

(Place the apple back into the basket to give back to the Earth later. Pick up the chalice once again and say)-

“Just as we have sorrow,

 We also have joy –

 For this is the time of the wine harvest!”

 

(Now, bless the chalice of wine by placing your athame inside it while saying) –

“I bless this wine of the harvest in the name of our Mother Earth and Father God.”

 

(Take a drink from the chalice in toast of the Goddess and God. When finished, set aside a portion to give back to the Earth later)

The HPS announces the intent of the Coven before throwing and interpreting the I-Ching. Each member then picks a tarot card and we interpret how that card defines their role for the period of time defined.

The Crone dismisses Deity

The Crone takes the sword and traces the Circle counterclockwise as the HP sings once:

He sings it again as the member joins the second time before we all leave.
